The first opportunity to open the scoring went to Vietnam as Vu Minh Tuan chipped a nice left-wing pass to Ha Minh Tuan, whose header, however, failed to find the net.

Vietnam kept better hold of the ball during most of the first half, creating many chances to go ahead but could not convert them into goals.

Despite a slow start, Singapore took a shock lead on first-half stoppage time thanks to a long-range shot by Sahil Suhaimi that proved surprising enough to beat goalie Buu Ngoc.

After the break, Vietnam intensified their offenses but only to see their score-equalising efforts blocked by Singapore's stubborn defence.

The unexpected loss beat Vietnam down to second place with three points on the provisional Group A standings, while Singapore climbed to top with a one-point advantage.

In another Tuesday match, defending champions Malaysia recorded just a modest 2-0 victory over underdogs Brunei.

Vietnam will have four days off before taking on Laos in their third group game on December 15.
