In the first seven months of 2013, Vietnam exported 11,000 tonnes of fresh blue crab to Japan, accounting for 60% of Japan’s total fresh blue crab imports, reported VASEP, citing sources from Japan’s Customs and Tariff Bureau.
VASEP said Vietnamese blue crabs are preferred in Japan partly because of their competitive price.
Vietnam’s price of JPY1,871 per kilogram is lower than those of China, the Philippines and Bangladesh, which sell fresh blue crabs for JPY3,815, JPY 2,656 and JPY2,194 per kilogram, respectively.
However, Vietnam’s frozen blue crab exports to Japan trail behind exports from China and Bahrain, as the price of the frozen crab is more than triple the prices of the other two countries.
