Vietnam Publishing Association third National Congress held in Hanoi

Nhan Dan – The Vietnam Publishing Association (VPA) should continue its role as a social and political organisation to realise its three major tasks for the publishing sector, including modernisation, professionalisation and socialisation.

Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee (PCC) Dinh The Huynh made the request while attending the VPA’s third National Congress for the 2011-2015 term in Hanoi on December 14.

Politburo member Huynh, who is also Head of the PCC Commission for Communication and Education, urged the association to produce publications on Vietnamese culture, science and arts and disseminate them both nationally and internationally.

He praised the efforts and achievements of the publishing staff over the past years, affirming that the Party highly appreciates the sector’s important role in accumulating and promoting knowledge and spiritual values, which has contributed to improving public intellectual standards, developing a cultural lifestyle and building and perfecting human dignity.

The Politburo member also asked the association to give opinions and suggestions for amendments and supplements to the Law on Publication.

VPA Chairman Nguyen Kiem presented a report on ‘Improving the VPA’s Role, Making Effective Contributions to Building and Developing Vietnam’s Publishing Sector in the New Situation’.

According to the report, over the past five years,Vietnam’s publishing sector has recorded significant progress regarding the number of titles and copies published annually despite facing difficulties and the negative impacts of the economic downturn. Since 2006, 280 million copies of 25,000 book titles have been published each year.

The Association has also co-ordinated with relevant agencies to devise action plans for implementing the amended Law on Publication and the PCC Secretariat’s Instruction No. 42 CT/TW on improving the quality of publishing.

The congress appointed a new 29-member executive committee for the association with Deputy Minister of the Information and Communications Do Quy Doan elected as chairman.
