At a contract-signing ceremony in Hanoi on October 14, Hoang Quoc Vuong, chairman of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) said the plant will consist of three turbine groups with a capacity of 1,980 MW.
The plant will use imported coal to generate over 12 billion kWh a year, which will help the southern region reduce power shortages.
The construction phase, expected to cost US$1.14 billion, will start in the third quarter of 2014, and the plant’s first turbine is expected to generate electricity by 2018, he said.
Established in 2009, VTEC – the project developer, is partnered with EVN, One Energy Ventures Ltd and the Thai Binh Duong Company.
