Vietnam’s first opera to be re-enacted on Hanoi’s stage

Nhan Dan – ‘Co Sao’ (Lady Sao), the first opera composed with Vietnamese revolutionary music by songwriter Do Nhuan, will return to the Hanoi Opera House on November 24 and 25 to celebrate his 90th birthday (1922-2012) and the 55th anniversary of the Vietnam Musicians’ Association (VMA) (1957-2012).

The programme, held jointly by the VMA, the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra and the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet Theatre, will feature the best in Vietnamese operatic talent, including sopranos Ha Pham Thang Long and Vanh Khuyen, baritone Manh Dung, bass Manh Duc and tenor Manh Chung.

It is the third time the opera has been performed on the professional stage after its debut in 1965 to mark the 20th anniversary of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and the second time in 1976 to mark the country’s reunification.

The opera, composed between 1960 and 1963, presents in context the northwest region before the August Revolution 1945, telling the story of Sao, a 19-year-old ethnic Thai girl who overcame many difficulties to join the revolution against French colonialism.

Do Nhuan (1922-1991) was born in Thai Hoc commune, Cam Binh district in Hai Duong province. He joined revolutionary activities in the early 1940s and became the first General Secretary of the VMA from 1958 to 1983. He was presented with the Ho Chi Minh Awards for Literature and Arts in 1964.
