Xi Jinping re-elected as General Secretary of Communist Party of China

Xi Jinping was re-elected as the General Secretary of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) during the committee’s first plenary session on October 23.

The session, presided over by Xi Jinping, was attended by 203 members of the 20th CPC Central Committee and 168 alternate members.

24 members of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee were also elected, including 13 newly elected members and 11 re-elected members.

The seven members of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee as elected at the session are Xi Jinping, Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, and Li Xi.

The seven members of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee are Cai Qi, Shi Taifeng, Li Ganjie, Li Shulei, Chen Wenqing, Liu Jinguo, and Wang Xiaohong.

Xi Jinping was also named chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission at the session.

Xi Jinping was born in 1953 and is from Fuping in Shaanxi Province.

Xi joined the Communist Party of China in 1974. He graduated from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tsinghua University where he completed an in-service graduate programme in Marxist theory and ideological and political education. He holds a Doctor of Law degree.

Xi Jinping was an alternate member of the 15th CPC Central Committee and was a member of the 16th to 20th CPC Central Committee. He was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo Bureau of the 17th to 20th CPC Central Committee.

In 2012 he became General Secretary of the 18th CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission. He was elected President of China in 2013.

In 2017, Xi was also elected as General Secretary of the 19th CPC Central Committee and Chairman of the CPC Central Military Commission. He was re-elected as President of China in March 2018.

After the session, the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee met Chinese and international reporters covering the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.
