Campaign promotes voluntary spirit among youth union members

Nearly 25,000 teams of youth union members were established to engage in community activities launched during the three-month summer volunteer youth campaign 2021. Of which, 2.4 million of them directly participated in the fight against COVID-19.

The 2021 campaign, the 22nd of its kind to be launched by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, took place from June 1 to August 31. It featured a series of activities on building new-style rural areas, ensuring social order and security, assisting in the COVID-19 fight, and stabilising people’s lives amidst the pandemic.

Prominent among the activities included the “Tiep suc mua thi” (University entrance exam support) programme, divided into four sub-programmes namely “Mua he xanh” (Green Summer), “Hoa phuong do” (Red Flamboyant), “Ky nghi hong” (Red Vacation) and “Hanh quan xanh” (Green Operation).

The programme attracted the participation of more than 56,000 youth union members, who provided free training, knowledge and encouragement to candidates in the national high school graduation and university entrance exams.

Not only encouraging the youth’s pioneering spirit in the building of new-style rural areas, climate change adaption, the 2021 youth volunteering campaign also attracted the youth’s participation in a series of activities to support frontline workers and those affect by the pandemic.

In Bac Giang province, the local Youth Union launched a volunteer programme, teaming up with Luc Ngan farmers in the consumption of agricultural products. Under the programme, thousands of youth union members joined hands with lychee farmers in harvesting, packaging, and transporting lychees. This year marked the first time the Luc Ngan ‘thieu’ lychee has been sold on e-commerce platforms, paving the way for the consumption of the crop in the future.

Youth unions of cities and provinces nationwide have also been active in mobilising financial support and donating food, medical equipment and the necessary items to help people in pandemic-hit areas in the northern region amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

In May and June, thousands of young lecturers and students at medical universities and colleges in Hanoi voluntarily headed to Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Dien Bien provinces after the localities became pandemic hotspots.

Then when the pandemic was basically brought under control in July and August, youth union members in Bac Giang left their hometown to support in the fight against COVID-19 in Hanoi and southern localities.

Through the three-month summer campaign, youth union members across the country helped upgrade 1,600km of rural roads, organise more than 7,700 events on environmental protection, assist nearly 20,000 households to overcome the consequences of natural disasters, implemented nearly 7,000 blood donation events, and hosted more than 3,500 swimming classes for children.

In addition, more than 34,000 volunteer teams were established under the campaign to assist people in the concentrated quarantine areas, nearly 50,000 teams were set up to support COVID-19 pandemic response at COVID-19 checkpoints, and over 171,000 communication teams were formed to raise public’s awareness of pandemic prevention and control measures.
