The festival comprised a wide range of activities, notably a martial arts performance re-enacting the Ngoc Hoi – Dong Da Battle, which liberated Thang Long (modern-day Hanoi) and drove an estimated 20 million Qing soldiers out of the country 225 years ago.
It was one of the most resounding victories in the age-old Vietnamese history of national defence. It foiled the Qing’s plot to impose their rule over Vietnam, then known as Dai Viet or the Great Viet.
The same day, in the central city of Hue, a solemn ceremony was held to mark Quang Trung’s self-proclamation as emperor and the Ngoc Hoi – Dong Da victory.
On February 3, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc offered flowers and incense at the statue of Emperor Quang Trung in the hero’s hometown in Binh Dinh Province.
