Nam Chang is a natural stream that meanders gracefully through golden rice fields and tranquil villages, embraced by layers of limestone mountains. Together, they form the poetic, picturesque scenery that characterises Lam Binh district in Tuyen Quang province.
Around 10 ethnic groups live together in the Lam Binh tourism area, creating a rich cultural tapestry and opening up opportunities for the development of community-based and eco-tourism.
In Lam Binh, visitors can enjoy kayaking on the Nam Chang stream all year round. The ideal time is from June to August, when the weather is pleasant and the atmosphere cool and refreshing.
Under the radiant morning or late-afternoon sunlight, blending with the golden glow of ripened rice fields, travellers can admire a charming and romantic natural panorama.
For generations, local people have used bamboo rafts as a means of transport along the stream—to carry agricultural produce, catch fish or travel in daily life.
In recent years, alongside the growth of community tourism, festival tourism, spiritual tourism and experience-based tourism, kayaking on the Nam Chang stream has emerged as a distinctive local attraction. The service fee for kayaking is around 200,000 VND per two-person kayak per hour.
In addition to kayaking, visitors can enjoy free natural stream bathing, check-in spots, fish catching and collecting stream products, as well as sampling traditional cuisine prepared by local ethnic communities.
Developing and enhancing the kayak experience on the Nam Chang stream has become a key highlight in Lam Binh’s tourism strategy.
At present, the kayaking route for visitors stretches approximately 1km. It is reported that local authorities plan to continue mobilising resources to dredge, upgrade and restore the stream bed. They also intend to build check-in stops, rest points and extend the kayaking route to offer tourists richer and more appealing experiences.
