Some provinces reported high rises in their forestry area including Quang Nam with over 30,000 ha, Binh Dinhwith over 51,000 ha, Phu Yen with over 42,000 ha, Quang Binh with over 21,000 ha and others.
The total existing forest area in the central region is 5,553,610 ha, accounting for 38.01% of the total national forested area, including 3,790,955 ha of natural forest and1,762,655 ha of planted forest.
The forest coverage rate in this region has reached54.99%, ranking second among eight ecological regions, after the Northeast region which has a coverage rate of56.28%.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development isimplementing a programme to reduce emissions from deforestation in the North Central Region as this region holds special importance in biodiversity and socio-economic situation.
The ministry has signed an agreement with the World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF), unlocking up to US$51.5 million for Vietnamese efforts to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and forest degradation until 2025.
Over the past years, forest management and protection has received greater attention and direction from all levels, helping to raise national forestry coverage ratesfrom 40.84% in 2015 to 41.89% in 2019. This rate is estimated to rise to 42% in 2020, meeting the target set at the Resolution of the 12th National Party Congress.
As of December 31, 2019, the forested area of the entire country was 14,609,220 ha, including 10,292,434 ha of natural forest and 4,316,786 ha of plantation forest.
