Greening packaging for sustainable exports

On April 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Investment and Trade Promotion Centre (ITPC), in collaboration with relevant agencies, organised a seminar titled “Compliance with Sustainability Regulations in Consumption and Export of Food and Food Packaging.”

At the seminar, Ho Thi Quyen, IPTC Deputy Director, highlighted that the green transition is a strategic shift for businesses to enhance their competitiveness, bring long-term benefits, and attract investment.

Sustainable consumption trends, focusing on environmentally friendly products, are gaining increasing attention. According to a 2023 survey by Nielsen IQ, 38% of Vietnamese consumers value businesses’ practical initiatives and actions to improve the environment.

Quyen also emphasised that in the context of tariff impacts, leveraging free trade agreements (FTAs) and understanding export regulations, especially those concerning sustainability, will help businesses reduce risks and gain export advantages.

The seminar focused on the technology of producing biodegradable packaging worldwide and in Vietnam. Speakers noted that while Vietnam has an abundance of raw bio-materials and competitive production costs, it still faces challenges in high-skilled human resources, research and development (R&D) investment, and infrastructure.

To realise the potential of the packaging industry, experts suggested that domestic businesses need to increase investment in R&D, strengthen international cooperation on technology transfer, and training and attract talent and skilled professionals. They also urged the construction of modern infrastructure (such as 3D printing, biotechnology, nanomaterials, and automation), taking advantage of government support policies and fostering a culture of innovation within companies.

Speakers further highlighted that if businesses wish to export to other countries, their products must first be successful in the domestic market, gaining entry into supermarket chains and competing with similar products.

Through the seminar, the organisers hope that businesses will be able to update themselves on the latest sustainability standards, particularly in the food and packaging sectors, and adjust their strategies to enhance competitiveness and pursue sustainable exports.
