Ho Chi Minh City launches first cross-sea UAV delivery route

On February 12, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Science and Technology, in coordination with Viet Nam Post and CT UAV, officially launched a postal delivery route using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) between Can Gio Commune and Vung Tau Ward.

This is regarded as a pioneering step in the application of smart transport solutions, helping to ease pressure on Ho Chi Minh City’s road transport infrastructure.

The event took place at the Can Gio Ferry Terminal, marking the launch of the first cross-sea unmanned postal route and establishing a multi-stakeholder cooperation model for rolling out new solutions.

A highlight of the event was the activation ceremony for a live flight, during which an actual package was transported from Can Gio to Vung Tau.

The entire journey, from cargo loading and take-off to the flight across the sea route, landing, and handover at the receiving point, was livestreamed.

Under the project, Viet Nam Post serves as the lead postal service provider, responsible for designing operational processes, setting quality standards, and organising the collection and delivery of packages.

In the initial phase, Viet Nam Post will prioritise small parcels weighing under 5 kg, including files, documents, and e-commerce parcels.

The drone-based postal delivery route not only significantly shortens delivery times between two areas with distinctive geographical conditions, but also offers customers an additional, faster delivery option with real-time parcel tracking.

Amid rapidly growing delivery demand that requires greater speed, flexibility, and efficiency, UAVs are expected to become a breakthrough solution, which reduces transit times, optimises costs, expands service coverage, and eases pressure on traditional transport infrastructure.
