According to Associate Professor Do Dinh Tung, Director of Duc Giang General Hospital, “UAVs in medical transport are a highly effective, even breakthrough, solution. Currently, transporting emergency medicines or medical specimens from Duc Giang General Hospital to nearby facilities such as Gia Lam General Hospital, Soc Son Hospital and commune health stations often takes hours due to traffic congestion. With this UAV project, it now takes just a few minutes for medicines to reach patients in urgent need of care.”

He added that, in order to support lower-level hospitals and commune health stations, Duc Giang General Hospital needs to make breakthroughs in technological innovation, specifically in transporting medical supplies by UAV. “For example, in cases of poisoning, our hospital has antidote medicines that can be delivered immediately to facilities to provide timely treatment. Once the project proves successful, I hope the model can be scaled up to assist neighbouring provinces such as Bac Ninh, Hung Yen and Hai Phong.”

The trial UAVs were thoroughly inspected before take-off.

Medical items, such as medicines and blood samples, are placed in the UAV’s cargo compartment and securely sealed, ensuring that transport does not affect their quality.

Adrenaline, amiodarone and nitroglycerin are critical emergency medicines commonly used in life-threatening situations. These are among the medicines transported by UAVs to hospitals.

Throughout the pilot project, Viet Nam Post and Duc Giang General Hospital have consistently identified strict compliance with legal regulations as a fundamental requirement.

The application of UAVs is implemented in full compliance with relevant regulations of the Ministry of National Defence, the Ministry of Public Security, and other state management authorities.

UAVs represent a new technological application in modern transport, which Viet Nam Post has studied systematically based on its large-scale logistics and transport network capabilities.

Building on their close cooperation in the past and recognising shared orientations in applying new technologies, the two sides agreed to jointly pilot the project.

The medical transport UAV officially took off carrying emergency medicines to Gia Lam General Hospital, covering a distance of more than 10 kilometres.

For a journey of over 10 kilometres, travel during rush hour can take nearly 30 minutes, whereas the medical transport UAV completes the trip in just 10 minutes.

After successfully completing the two pilot flights, Viet Nam Post and Duc Giang General Hospital will continue to jointly assess the effectiveness of the model, based on which they will propose and seek licences to expand additional flight routes.
