Developed by the Ha Noi Cheo Theatre, The Charm of Ha Noi’s Cheo is the first in a series of high-quality arts programmes celebrating Ha Noi’s art forms. The initiative aims to cultivate a portfolio of distinctive cultural products for the capital, propelling the development of the cultural industries.
Running for approximately 60 minutes, the play immerses audiences in the world of traditional Cheo theatre through a selection of exquisite classical excerpts, including Thi Mau Len Chua (Thi Mau Visits the Pagoda), Suy Van Gia Dai (Suy Van Pretends to be Crazy), Luu Binh–Duong Le, and Phu Thuy So Ma (The Witch is Scared of Ghosts).
A highlight of the performance is the enhanced engagement between artists and audiences, enabling viewers not only to appreciate the performance but also to explore the unique features of Cheo art.
The project brought together artists from the Ha Noi Cheo Theatre, including Meritorious Artists Hong Nam and Phuong May, alongside a host of emerging talents.
As part of the series, on the evening of July 30, the Thang Long Theatre of Music and Dance will present a production entitled Ha Noi Stories – A Typical Hanoian Day. On August 10, the Ha Noi Cai Luong Theatre will stage the play Daughter of Ha Noi.
In September 2026, the Ha Noi Drama Theatre and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre will also unveil new high-quality productions.
These shows and plays will be performed regularly, gradually establishing an ecosystem of artistic products bearing the Ha Noi brand, helping to transform the capital into an attractive cultural destination for domestic and international visitors.
According to Le Thi Anh Mai, Deputy Director of the Ha Noi Department of Culture and Sports, through investment in high-quality arts programmes, Ha Noi not only endeavours to preserve and elevate the value of traditional arts, but also hopes to forge cultural products with long-term potential, enrich the cultural life of the people, stimulate tourism, and promote the image of a time-honoured capital to audiences at home and abroad.
