Hai Phong: Programme promotes UNESCO-recognised cultural heritages

A programme was held in the northern port city of Hai Phong on May 14 to introduce to the public the art of ‘ca tru’ (ceremonial singing) and the worship of Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms, which are two Vietnamese intangible cultural heritages recognised by UNESCO.

The programme was hosted by the city’s Cultural Centre to celebrate the 68th anniversary of Hai Phong’s liberation (1955-2023).

According to Director of Hai Phong city’s Cultural Centre Do Thi Khanh Huong, the two unique art forms have made an important contribution to connecting communities of heritage practitioners, while promoting understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations and religions.

The programme in Hai Phong aimed to honour the two art forms and promote its unique values to local people and visitors from both at home and abroad, she stated.

‘Ca tru’ singing was practiced mainly in the northern region of Vietnam around the 15th century. The art form comprises a harmonious mixture of poetry and music accompanied by traditional musical instruments.

It was recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in October 2009.

The Mother Goddess Worship of the Three Realms artistically combines folklore elements such as costumes, music, ‘chau van’ (spiritual singing), dance and folk performances in ‘hau dong’ (spirit mediumship) rituals and festivals.

It not only maintains its role and position in the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people but also affirms the country’s cultural identity in the common flow of human culture.

In 2016, UNESCO inscribed the practice of Mother Goddesses of the Three Realms Worship on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritages of Humanity.
