The temperature at Fansipan peak was recorded at around -2°C in the early hours of this morning. Along with light rain, the rainwater met the cold and condensed, forming ice that clung to grass, forest trees, house eaves, stone steps along paths, and outdoor objects in a thick white layer, creating a poetic landscape.
The ice appeared from the summit of Fansipan and spread down to an altitude of about 2,700 metres, gradually weakening at lower elevations.
This is the first ice event recorded on Fansipan peak in 2026.
The Lao Cai Meteorological Station recorded the lowest temperatures as follows at 7:00 am: Lao Cai dropped to 13°C, Yen Bai 12.4°C, Pho Rang 12.7°C, Luc Yen 11.9°C, Van Chan below 11°C, Mu Cang Chai 8.5°C, Bac Ha 7.5°C, and Sa Pa was the coldest at just 4.1°C.
Forecasts indicate that the cold air mass will remain stable in intensity during the day and night of January 7. Temperatures in the Fansipan area and the Sa Pa National Tourist Area are expected to stay low, and there is a high likelihood that ice will continue to occur during the night and early morning of January 8.
To ensure safety, local authorities in the Sa Pa National Tourist Area have warned residents and tourists to proactively implement measures to protect people, livestock, and crops from the cold, in order to minimise possible damage.
