Generations of Vietnamese in France gathered in Paris to join the Hung Kings commemoration ceremony organised by the Viet Nam Cultural Centre in France, on April 25 (the ninth day of the third lunar month in the year of the horse).

The event provided an occasion for generations of Vietnamese living and working in France to remember and pay tribute to the Hung Kings and the forebears who founded and defended the nation, while also expressing their determination to uphold patriotism and the spirit of self-reliance, and contribute, together with Vietnamese people at home and abroad.

Opening the Hung Kings commemoration ceremony, held for the second time at the Viet Nam Cultural Centre in France, were a ceremonial drum performance entitled “The Spirit of Viet Nam” and a display of traditional Vietnamese martial arts.

Among those attending were Trinh Duc Hai, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Viet Nam to France, and his spouse; Nguyen Thi Van Anh, Ambassador and Head of the Permanent Delegation of Viet Nam to UNESCO; Anoa Suzzane Dussol, Viet Nam’s Tourism Ambassador in France; as well as generations of Vietnamese in France and international friends.

Firmin Edouard Matoko, former Assistant Director-General for External Relations and Africa of UNESCO, said: “I am greatly honoured to attend this traditional ceremony of the Vietnamese people today. It is an extremely important event reflecting the Vietnamese tradition of gratitude to one’s roots, and it also helps strengthen solidarity within the community.”

Marika Phan said that through the event she felt very happy to witness the growing strength of the Vietnamese community in France, as well as the solidarity, closeness and affection shared among people living far from their homeland. Kevin shared his joy at discovering distinctive aspects of Vietnamese traditional culture through his wife, saying that each time he explored a new cultural feature, he learned something new.
