“The Journey to Find Grandmother Geumdarae’s Granddaughter” is a representative Korean gugak (traditional music) musical, widely performed for families and children in the RoK.
The work is based on the Seodo folk song “Geumdaraekkung”, which originates from the Hwanghae region, offering not only children but also families joyful and relaxing moments.
The story begins when Grandmother Geumdarae loses her granddaughter, Boony. During her search, a group of animal friends perform samulnori and help her reunite with her beloved granddaughter. A bear beats the drum, a mischievous tiger plays the small gong, a gentle deer performs on the janggu drum, and a rabbit joins in with a gong performance combined with traditional plate-spinning, together creating a colourful and engaging adventure.
Young audiences can easily interact with the performance and experience Korean traditional culture in a natural way by chanting Korean rhythmic exclamations, singing along to the folk song “Geumdaraekkung”, and trying out traditional Korean plate-spinning.
According to Park Chan A, Director of the Korean Cultural Center in Viet Nam, the musical performance “The Journey to Find Grandmother Geumdarae’s Granddaughter” conveys a meaningful message that “when people help one another overcome difficulties, everyone can be happy”, while also expressing hope that Viet Nam and the RoK will continue to deepen mutual understanding through music.
