In Pictures: Cuban artists bring a “feast” of classical ballet masterpieces to Viet Nam

On June 26 and 29, the Cuban National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de Cuba) will perform at the Ho Guom Theatre. This is a rare opportunity for art lovers to witness the unique fusion between Cuban cultural heritage and the world’s classical ballet masterpieces.

This programme is the next instalment in the international event series Musical Seasons, featuring excerpts from classical ballet works such as Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, alongside selected pieces from performances imbued with distinctive Cuban flair.

All performances in the "Cuba Ballet" programme are delivered by artists of the Cuban National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de Cuba)—currently one of the most renowned ballet companies in the world.

Founded in 1948 by legendary ballet artists Alicia Alonso, Fernando Alonso, and Alberto Alonso, the Company has, for more than 75 years, toured prestigious stages across the globe, earning numerous prestigious accolades such as the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris and the Félix Varela Order of the Republic of Cuba.

Alicia Alonso (1920–2019) was a global ballet icon and a cultural symbol of the Cuban nation. Through her masterful blend of classical technique and the distinctive strength and spirit of the “heroic island’s” people, she established a unique Cuban ballet style, while also contributing to the shaping of global ballet artistry.

Today, the Ballet Nacional de Cuba continues to uphold and develop its tradition-based artistic path under the direction of Viengsay Valdés, who serves as Artistic Director and Prima bailarina of the Company.

Born in Havana, Cuba’s capital, Viengsay Valdés began her ballet training at the Alejo Carpentier Elementary Ballet School and graduated with distinction in 1994. She immediately joined the national ballet company and became Primera bailarina in 2001.

With more than 30 years devoted to ballet and numerous national and international awards to her name, Viengsay Valdés embodies technical excellence and has contributed to elevating Cuban ballet onto the global stage.

Returning to the Cuban National Ballet: recognised as a national cultural heritage, the Company continues its mission of preserving and developing ballet, bringing audiences outstanding works and memorable artistic experiences through every performance.

In addition, among the artists participating in this Viet Nam tour, audiences with a passion for the art form will also have the chance to enjoy performances by many of the Cuban National Ballet’s most celebrated names, including Dani Hernández, Ányelo Montero, Anette Delgado, Sadaise Arencibia, and Yankiel Vázquez.

It is known that the Cuban National Ballet has performed in 62 countries across five continents, building a repertoire of more than 700 works—many of which are new productions.

In 2018, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cuba officially recognised the Cuban National Ballet as a National Cultural Heritage, in honour of its immense contributions to the preservation and development of the art of ballet.
