According to Dang Hai Anh, Deputy Head of the Department of Oil, Gas and Coal, oil has been discovered at the Hai Su Vang (HSV-2X) field in Block 15-2, within the Cuu Long Basin, located about 65 km off the southern coast of Viet Nam. The operator is a subsidiary of Murphy Oil.

At present, Murphy Oil Group (the US) is involved in oil and gas exploration activities in Blocks 144-145, 15-1, and 15-2. Exploration and appraisal activities in recent years have achieved positive results. Under current regulations, investors are responsible for continuing appraisal work and preparing resource and reserve reports on oil and gas for submission to the competent authorities.

Previously, in 2024, Murphy Oil began drilling an exploration well at the Hai Su Vang field. In 2025, it successfully drilled an appraisal well (a well drilled after an initial discovery) to assess the scale, reserves, and development potential. Based on the results obtained, the Hai Su Vang field is assessed to have significant potential.

According to reports, Viet Nam’s oil production in 2025 reached about 10 million tonnes, with gas output of around 6 billion cubic metres. Together with the newly discovered reserves at the Hai Su Vang field, this is considered a very positive outcome.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade has requested the investor to prepare reports for submission to the competent authorities for review and appraisal. In the coming period, the ministry will also coordinate with Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group and other relevant ministries and agencies to continue reviewing the results in order to ensure an objective and thorough assessment.

According to Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, this is a very positive result for the energy sector. In the time ahead, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will continue to coordinate with relevant units to conduct detailed appraisal and evaluation.

In addition, at the press briefing, responding to questions from reporters about the progress of reciprocal trade negotiations with the US, Deputy Minister Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that Viet Nam and the US have so far conducted five rounds of negotiations, with the sixth round expected to take place next week. The overall spirit is that both sides are striving to generate positive momentum towards reaching agreement on key issues.
