Lifter seizes first gold medal for Vietnam at Youth Olympics 2018

Weightlifter Ngo Son Dinh brought home the first gold medal for Vietnam at the ongoing 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Argentina after finishing triumphant in the men’s 56kg category on October 7 (local time).

17-year-old Dinh topped the snatch event by conquering the weight level of 114kg in his third attempt, 5kg more than the next best lift of his Thai competitor.
In the clean and jerk discipline, the Vietnamese athlete lifted 140kg in his first attempt before succeeding with the remaining two attempts at 142kg and 148kg, thus taking top supreme with a total lift of 262kg.
The silver medal went to Thailand’s Chomchuen Natthawat, who lifted 239kg in total.

In addition to Dinh’s gold, weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thu Trang secured another silver medal for Vietnam following her runner-up finish in the women’s 44kg category with a total lift of 147kg, 15kg behind the gold medalist, Katherin Oriana of Venezuela.

The 2018 YOG, the third event of its kind, is taking place in Buenos Aires from October 6 to 18, featuring competitors aged between 14-18 from more than 200 countries and territories around the world.

Vietnam is represented by 13 athletes in seven sport events, including badminton, gymnastics, taekwondo, dancesport, weightlifting, swimming and track and field.
