October cultural festival celebrates Viet Nam’s ethnic identity and customs

From October 1 to 31, a series of vibrant activities will take place at the Viet Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism (Dong Mo, Ha Noi) under the theme “You are the flower of the mountains.” The programme aims to honour the traditional identity and customs of the 54 ethnic groups within this “Common House.”

Many highlight events will be held at the Viet Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in October.

With daily and weekend programmes alongside various highlight events, visitors can participate in rituals and festivals, explore customs, and enjoy distinctive folk performances. These activities provide the public with opportunities to appreciate traditional values, the spirit of village solidarity, and national pride.

A key highlight is the reenactment of the Water Jar Worship Ceremony of the Ba Na people (Gia Lai). This ritual holds great significance in their spiritual life, expressing reverence for the water deity and prayers for favourable weather, bountiful harvests, and the well-being of villagers. The ceremony is performed solemnly, followed by a lively festival featuring gongs, xoang dances, jar wine, and folk games—vividly showcasing the community’s cultural bonds.

In addition, the cultural exchange programme “Fragrance of the Great Forest” will present folk songs, dances, and traditional musical instruments performed by the Ba Na people and other groups, including the Xo Dang, Co Tu, Ta Oi, and Gia Rai. The Ba Na cultural space will also be recreated with handicrafts, brocade weaving, folk games, traditional cuisine, and costume shows.

Weekend activities will carry varied themes: the folk programme “Flowers of October” celebrating women on the occasion of Vietnamese Women’s Union Day (October 20); “Melodies of the Mountains and Forests” by Central Highlands ethnic groups praising the homeland, the Party and President Ho Chi Minh; and “Call of the Love Season” by northern ethnic groups with their communal xoe dances. Visitors will be immersed in folk spaces, instrument performances, traditional games, and regional cuisine.

Traditional cultural experience activities will run throughout the month, featuring folk games such as o an quan (mandarin square capturing), walking on stilts, bamboo dancing, swinging, painting, and trying on ethnic costumes. These will offer opportunities for pupils and young people to develop creative thinking and skills, and to bond with friends and family during their visit to the Village.

In addition, visitors can join the daily and weekend activities of 16 ethnic communities, ranging from experiential tourism, making cakes, preparing traditional cakes, folk games, and rituals for peace and blessings at Khmer pagodas and Cham towers.

The diverse and abundant programme with the theme “You are the flower of the mountains” not only honours the cultural heritage of Viet Nam’s ethnic groups, creating a space for exchange and experience, and enriching the spiritual life of the people, but also affirming the role of the Viet Nam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism as an attractive cultural and tourism destination this autumn.
