The bomb, identified as an MK82, was discovered by a resident in Kim Ngan commune while she was digging soil to rebuild her yard in preparation for the Lunar New Year (Tet) 2026.

Alarmed by the discovery, her family immediately halted construction and reported to local authorities.

Upon receiving a request from the provincial Military Command, PeaceTrees Viet Nam promptly deployed a specialised team to the site. The demining personnel carried out more than 2.5 hours of manual excavation to access the device, inspect the fuse, and assess its safety condition.

The unexploded ordnance was later moved to a designated area for detonation.

Quang Tri is among the provinces most heavily contaminated with unexploded ordnance from wartime in Viet Nam. Landmines and bombs have claimed over 3,400 lives and injured more than 5,100 people since the war ended in 1975.
