The VJU was established as the seventh member college of the Hanoi-based Vietnam National University (VNU) under a decision signed by the Prime Minister in July 2014.
The ceremony saw the presence of Minister of Education and Training Phung Xuan Nha together with representatives of several ministries of Vietnam and Japan, as well as educational experts and enterprises from both countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Phung Xuan Nha affirmed that the establishment of the VJU is the harmonious combination between Japanese education - one of the leading sources of education in the world and the VNU - Vietnam’s leading research and training centre.
The minister also spoke highly of efforts made by the VNU for its direction and administration of the VJU over the past time, as well as the enthusiastic participation of accredited professors and scientists from Vietnam and Japan in building training programmes and preparing necessary conditions for the operation of the university.
According to VNU President Nguyen Kim Son, the VJU will offer six master’s courses in nano technology, environmental technique, infrastructure technique, regional studies, public policies, and business administration.
The courses will be run with assistance provided by Japan’s well-known tertiary establishments such as the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, University of Tsukuba, Yokohama National University, Waseda University, and Ritsumeikan University.
The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and related Japanese schools will send experienced lecturers to take charge of at least 50% of specialised modules in each course. The rest will be covered by the VNU and VJU lecturers.
Following the first programmes, the VJU and its Japanese partners will design curricula for other doctoral, master’s and undergraduate courses.
The VNU will offer a number of full scholarships to VJU students. Several Japanese agencies, organisations, universities and businesses have expressed their intention to also sponsor scholarships.
