Tran Hung Dao was the supreme commander under the Tran dynasty famous for defeating three consecutive Mongol invasions in the 13th century.
The 1.59-metre tall ceramic statue was produced at the Chu Dau pottery village in Hai Duong and will be placed in the Truong Sa Lon temple.
Speaking at the ceremony, vice chairman of the Hai Duong provincial People’s Council, Nguyen Van Hop, said that in addition to the statue, a flag and copies of different items made during the Tran dynasty were also presented to encourage the people and soldiers on the island in protect the nation’s sovereignty over its sea and islands.
Earlier on May 5, an 11-metre tall stone statue of General Tran Hung Dao was unveiled on Song Tu Tay Island as a gift from the authorities and people of the northern province of Nam Dinh.
Both of the statues are similar to the sculpture of the hero located in February 3 Square in Nam Dinh city.
A ceremony was also held May 24 on Truong Sa Lon Island to present a national flag and some special stones as gifts to Truong Sa Island from the authorities and people of the northern mountainous province of Ha Giang.
The 54 square metre flag that was flown at the Lung Cu Flag Tower on the border between Vietnam and China was handed over at the ceremony, along with 22 stones from the UNESCO recognised Dong Van Stone Plateau.
The gifts aim to help strengthen the solidarity and close ties between Ha Giang province and the Truong Sa archipelago.
Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Quang Trung presented a national flag to the Ha Giang delegation on behalf of the soldiers and people living on the island.
