Typhoon No. 10 and floods cause over 16.500 billion VND in damages in Viet Nam

According to a report from the Department of Dike Management and Natural Disaster Prevention and Control under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, as of 5pm on October 3, Typhoon No. 10 and the following flooding, landslides, and tornadoes have caused severe damages in many provinces and cities.

In terms of human impact, 67 people have been reported dead or missing, including 53 fatalities and 14 missing, while 165 others have been injured. Many casualties were due to flash floods, landslides, falling trees, tornadoes, and capsized boats and fishing vessel incidents.

Damage to housing is extensive: 363 houses have collapsed or were destroyed; 174,211 others have been damaged or had their roofs blown off; and 64,399 have been flooded, mainly in central and northern provinces.

In agriculture, about 91,600 hectares of rice, crops and plants have been affected; 50,268 hectares of forest have been damaged; and more than 2,600 livestock and over 566,000 poultry have been killed or swept away. Aquaculture losses amounted to 17,521 hectares.

Infrastructure damages included 50 incidents affecting dikes; damages to 154km of canals and 204 irrigation works; and erosion of 33km of river and coastal embankments. Transportation was paralysed at around 9,400 locations in northern mountainous provinces and the North Central region.

The power sector reported 9,558 electricity poles have been broken or toppled; nearly 2.7 million customers lost electricity in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Quang Tri, more than 2.4 million of whom have been reconnected, leaving over 302,000 households still without electricity. Telecommunications have also been severely disrupted, with more than 1,100 BTS stations out of service.

Additionally, 1,515 schools have been damaged; 83,406 trees have been broken or uprooted. Preliminary economic losses in 12 provinces and cities amounted to over 16.510 billion VND, with the heaviest damage recorded in Ha Tinh (6,000 billion VND), Tuyen Quang (3,000 billion VND), Lao Cai (2.750 billion VND), and Nghe An (2.136 billion VND).

Localities are continuing to conduct damage assessments, urgently carrying out recovery efforts, ensuring people’s livelihoods, and restoring essential production and infrastructure.
