In his opening remarks, VAE Chairman Nguyen Thanh Binh stressed that the Party and State always value the position and role of elderly people in political and social life.
The State has issued many social welfare policies for the elderly recognising them as a vital resource for socio-economic development, he added.
Speaking at the ceremony, the President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee called on Party committees, authorities at all levels, ministries, agencies, and organisations to work together and propose further appropriate mechanisms and policies to improve the material and spiritual lives of elderly people.
He requested the VAE to reorganise and strengthen its structure under a new model to create all necessary conditions for elderly people to actively participate in activities and improve care, protection, and promotion of their roles.
Practical activities should be organised to assist elderly people living in poor and difficult households, especially in border, island, ethnic minority, and mountainous areas, he stated.
At the ceremony, VAE launched the humanitarian programme “Bright Eyes for the Elderly” for the 2025–2028 period.
According to the VAE report, during 2020–2024, the programme provided eye examinations and consultations for 3.6 million elderly people; performed cataract surgery for over 541,000 individuals; and provided 258,000 pairs of vision-correcting glasses, with a total funding of more than 513 billion VND.
