Viet Nam’s civil registration system is built on a solid legal foundation and applies information technology effectively to ensure transparency, accuracy, and consistency in recording vital events.

According to the National Statistics Office (NSO), the digitalisation of civil registration data not only reduces administrative procedures but also enhances the performance of state management agencies.

Currently, residents can register events through the National Public Service Portal, helping to save time and providing greater convenience in handling administrative procedures.

Viet Nam’s civil registration records major events such as births, marriages, divorces and deaths.

The NSO also stated that timely and accurate civil registration plays an important role in demographic management and in ensuring citizens’ rights.

Compared with results from the population census, statistical results based on civil registration data show a high level of similarity in many important indicators at the national level.

This opens the possibility of researching and evaluating the use of civil registration data as an alternative to population censuses, reducing government spending in the long run.

A study found that information fields stored and managed in the electronic civil registry are quite comprehensive, with many fields not found in other databases, such as causes of death and details of foreign nationals married to Vietnamese citizens.
