The work, compiled by a group of authors including Tran Duc Cuong, Vo Si Khai, Nguyen Duc Nhue, and Le Trung Dung, was published in December 2014.
The book comprises of three parts with the first part entitled 'The Southern region from the initial stages to the early 17th century'; the second part entitled 'The Southern region from the early 17th century to 1858'; and the third part entitled 'The Southern region in the era of French colonialism (1858-1945)'.
This is the seventh time the Tran Van Giau Science Award has been presented to a scientific work with the aim of honouring research on the Southern region.
Associate Professor, Dr.Nguyen Van Lich, vice chairman of the Tran Van Giau Science Award Committee said the late Professor Tran Van Giau always looked for successors to follow his career in researching the history of Vietnam and the Southern region. However, over the past 10 years, there has not yet been a work that has successfully achieved this.
The work 'History of the foundation and development of Southern region' (from the initial stages to 1945) holds a special position as it comes close to meeting Giau's requirements, Lich noted.
Professor Tran Van Giau founded the Tran Van Giau Science Award in 2002 to honour authors and research works on the Southern region in the areas of history and ideology. The award has been presented seven times to honour works in the field of history while the field of ideology has yet to find a work deserving of the recognition.
