After four years of implementation (2015–2019), the six-volume series, published by the Su That (Truth) National Political Publishing House, has been completed in six volumes. Each volume features a preface, conclusion, references, and appendices with maps, charts, images, and profiles of key figures. Altogether, the work comprises more than 4,500 pages, divided into 27 chapters and five appendices.

Associate Professor Dr Vo Van Sen, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Association of Historical Science and chief editor of the project, stated that the “History of Saigon–Ho Chi Minh City” book series, compiled by the Association, synthesises the latest, most modern, and updated research on the city. It reflects new perspectives on the history of Ho Chi Minh City within its current boundaries, drawing on archaeological findings that trace its past from prehistoric and protohistoric times through ancient history and into the contemporary era.

Employing a modern approach and a wealth of materials, the book series presents the most recent achievements of Vietnamese historical scholarship. It is written in the style of a general history, blending analytical commentary with vivid historical narrative, and is supplemented by illustrative appendices.

The work draws on archival materials, documents, and records from the national archives of the Party and State, as well as from libraries, archaeological findings, museums, memoirs, and local histories of Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Ta Quoc Trung, Deputy Head of the Commission for Communications, Education and Mass Mobilisation under the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, this is the first time the city has had a comprehensive general history that systematically and fully documents the historical trajectory of Saigon–Ho Chi Minh City from its origins up to 2015.

The series marks a significant scholarly achievement, particularly with new research in archaeology, cultural characteristics, economic development, social structure, politics, and military history. It not only presents a comprehensive account of history but also highlights the distinctive features of this unique land.
