To mark this occasion, Chongqing Daily, the official newspaper of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee, published an article on October 31 titled “Cooperation between Chongqing and Viet Nam enters a new stage.” The article reviewed the journey of solidarity during the revolutionary years and the close economic and trade ties in the new era, affirming that cooperation between the two sides is entering a completely new phase with improved mechanisms and broader prospects.

According to the article, the friendship between Viet Nam and Chongqing stems from their shared struggle for national liberation and against fascism.

The opening of the Vietnamese Consulate General in Chongqing is a significant outcome arising from recent high-level visits between the two countries’ leaders. It has been mentioned three times in the Viet Nam–China Joint Statements. The newspaper noted that this move reflects the common aspiration and strategic vision of the two countries’ leaders to strengthen ties between Vietnamese localities and China’s western region.

The article stressed that the Consulate General will serve as a foundation for both sides to expand cooperation in trade, culture, education, and tourism. It will also facilitate faster and more convenient visa and consular services for businesses and residents of Chongqing and the broader western region of China.

Nguyen Thi Lan, Chairwoman of the Vietnamese Association in Sichuan–Chongqing, said the opening of the Consulate General brings great benefits to the Vietnamese community living in the region. She affirmed her intention to help connect and introduce more friends to travel, work, study, and settle in Chongqing.

In May 2015, the Viet Nam Trade Promotion Office was established in Chongqing, becoming the first official overseas representative office of Viet Nam in the city.

Citing data, the article reported that the total import–export turnover between Viet Nam and Chongqing reached 30.52 billion yuan in the first eight months of 2025, up 24% year-on-year. Of this, Chongqing’s exports to Viet Nam stood at 20.26 billion yuan, an impressive increase of 111.4%. The newspaper emphasised that this strong growth reflects Chongqing’s huge potential in the Vietnamese market and highlights the key role of China’s “New Western Land–Sea Corridor.”

Currently, Chongqing operates two international air routes to Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City. From January to August 2025, the number of Vietnamese tourists entering Chongqing surged by 44.9%, reaching 23,100 arrivals.

Education cooperation between the two sides has also produced positive results. Viet Nam has become an important source of international students for Chongqing, while partnerships between universities and schools on both sides continue to strengthen. Many students from Sichuan and Chongqing are also studying in Viet Nam.

The article concluded that the opening of the Consulate General serves as a bridge connecting Vietnamese localities with Chongqing, not only facilitating visa issuance, cultural promotion, and tourism development, but also opening up new opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation in emerging fields such as the digital economy, green development, science and technology, innovation, and modern services.
