Deputy PM Binh, who is also Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, noted the fact road traffic accidents ranks among the top causes of death for children in 2017, the Traffic Safety Year 2018 has set a target for a10% decrease in the number of children injured or killed as a result of road traffic crashes.
He stressed the need to raise awareness of people, particularly children and their parents, on traffic safety in order to keep children safe on the road and realise the United Nations General Assembly-adopted resolution on ‘Improving global road safety’, which aims to reduce global road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2020.
He also ordered drastic measures to reduce traffic congestion in major cities, including Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and strictly handle the punishment of traffic violations.
He requested that investors and contractors for BOT projects must be chosen in a transparent manner in order to ensure construction progress and the quality of the projects.
According to a report delivered by Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee, traffic accidents claimed 8,279 lives and injured 17,040 others in 2017. Traffic accidents decreased in the number of cases, fatalities and injured victims from 2012 – 2017.
Traffic congestion remained complicated, particularly in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Most of prolonged and serious traffic jams were caused by traffic accidents, the increasing number of vehicles, and heavy rain and landslides.
