This high-level Russia–US exchange, built upon the agreements reached at the Alaska Summit, has led to consensus on seeking a peaceful solution for Ukraine, raising hopes of continuing to replace “confrontation” with “dialogue” in order to end the prolonged conflict.

The highlight of this dialogue between the two foreign ministers was their consensus on promoting cooperation between the two powers to find a peaceful resolution for Ukraine.

At the meeting, Minister Lavrov particularly emphasised Russia’s commitment to following the directions set out by the leaders of the two countries in Alaska, while expressing readiness to cooperate with the US to address the root causes of the conflict.

The talks also extended to bilateral issues, focusing on restoring political and social relations between the two countries. Both sides deeply acknowledged the importance of maintaining the positive momentum created by their leaders during the Alaska meeting.

They agreed to strengthen the efforts of their diplomatic missions and maintain constructive dialogue between their foreign policy agencies — an encouraging step towards consolidating peace and stability in both regions as well asdd worldwide.

The meeting between the two foreign ministers has helped to ease concerns following news of a recent shift in US President Donald Trump’s stance on Ukraine.

Earlier, in a statement posted on Truth Social after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, President Trump stated that with support from the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Ukraine “is in a position to fight”.

The White House leader also maintained his stance on tightening sanctions against Russia, while providing new weapons systems to Ukraine. This was seen as a surprising shift in the White House’s position, as for months President Trump had been urging President Zelensky to make concessions to secure a ceasefire agreement with Russia.

Western moves to increase pressure on Russia through sanctions, along with the US shift in stance on the conflict, are expected to affect efforts to find a peaceful solution for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Russia has continued to affirm its position of readiness for negotiations to resolve the conflict.

According to Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky, Russia does not reject any form of negotiations, but advocates for serious, substantive, and open dialogue.

President Vladimir Putin has cautiously expressed optimism, noting that there is “a light at the end of the tunnel” regarding the current conflict in Ukraine, but adding that it remains to be seen how developments unfold, especially given that President Trump has said finding a solution to the Ukraine crisis will take longer than expected.

According to the Kremlin’s spokesperson, peace talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations are currently on hold, but communication channels remain in place, allowing both sides to make contact when necessary.

President Donald Trump recently revealed that he will soon hold a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and expressed confidence that the Ukraine conflict would soon be resolved.

According to Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov, another round of consultations between Russia and the US through the Foreign Ministry is being planned, as many issues remain unresolved. Despite existing differences, Russia and the US are continuing efforts to find common ground to build the necessary dialogue towards a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
