The newly-named Kilo-636 submarine is the first of six diesel-powered 636 Varshavyanka attacking models that Vietnam purchased from Russia to enhance its navy’s capacity in defending the country’s territorial waters.

Deputy Minister of National Defence and Navy Command Admiral Nguyen Van Hien, who chaired the January 15 event, said the crew of the submarine should remain deeply aware of their political missions and targets.

Captain Nguyen Van Quan said the sailors would work very hard to make effective use of the modern submarine.

With a displacement of 3,000-3,950 tonnes, the 73.8m-long submarine has a capacity of 52 crewmembers and can operate at a maximum depth of 300 metres and at a range of 6,000-7,500 nautical miles for 45 days and nights.

It has the quietest engine in the world and is the best choice for reconnaissance and patrols.
