Lang Son Geopark recognised as UNESCO Global Geopark

Lang Son Geopark of Vietnam has been officially recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council.

The decision was made following a vote by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council on September 8, according to Luu Ba Mac, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Lang Son Province.

Based on the results of research and field surveys over the past decades, domestic and international scientists have affirmed that Lang Son Province has all the values ​​of global significance to be able to build and develop a geopark, aiming to become a global geopark.

Delegates attended and worked with the UNESCO expert team on the field assessment of the dossier proposing to recognise Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

In recent years, with the attention, leadership and direction of the Provincial Party Committee and the People's Committee of Lang Son Province, the participation and wholehearted support of departments, branches, localities at all levels, and the support of the local communities of eight districts and cities within the scope of Lang Son Geopark, the establishment, construction and development of Lang Son Geopark have been gradually taking place in a smooth and sustainable manner.

On November 30, 2023, with all efforts, the People's Committee of Lang Son Province coordinated with the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) to complete the dossier proposing Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark, then submitted it to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Therefore, at 3:30 pm Vietnam time, September 8, within the framework of the 8th International Conference of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network for the Asia-Pacific region, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council held a meeting to evaluate and vote on recognising Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
