Phong Nha-Ke Bang recognised as a World Biosphere Reserve

On June 6, Pham Hong Thai, Director of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, announced that UNESCO had officially recognised the national park as a World Biosphere Reserve, making it a member of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

Earlier, on June 5, at the 38th session of the International Coordinating Council of Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB-ICC) of UNESCO, held in Hernandarias, Paraguay, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in Quang Tri Province was officially recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve. It is the 12th World Biosphere Reserve in Viet Nam recognised by UNESCO.

The Phong Nha-Ke Bang World Biosphere Reserve covers a total area of 515,830ha, including a core zone of 123,326ha, a buffer zone of 220,055ha and a transition zone of 172,449ha.

The title once again affirms the outstanding global value of Phong Nha-Ke Bang in terms of biodiversity, ecosystems, and unique natural landscapes, while also recognising persistent efforts in nature conservation and promoting heritage values associated with sustainable local development.

This new title marks the third time Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has been honoured internationally by UNESCO, following its two previous recognitions as a World Natural Heritage Site and the first transboundary World Natural Heritage Site in Southeast Asia.
