Vietnam bags first gold medal in Myanmar

Nhan Dan Online – Martial artist Duong Thuy Vi won Vietnam’s first gold at the 27th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Myanmar.

Vi won the women’s jianshu (sword) event scoring 9.70 points on December 7 with Myanmar’s Sandy Oo just behind at 9.69, taking silver, whilst Malaysian Eyin Phoon’s 9.64 points won bronze.

Bui Minh Phuong added silver to Vietnam’s growing collection in the women’s nanquan (southern fist).

Other members of the Vietnam team didn’t fair so well. Nguyen Thanh Tung came in last scoring 9.54 points in the tai chi event and Tran Xuan Hiep won bronze in the changquan (long-range combat) with 9.68 points, a medal lower than the silver Hiep won two years ago.

Changquan competitor, Hiep was edged out by Aung Si Thu, a host competitor, who had 9.70 points whilst Achmad Hulaefi from Indonesia scored 9.69 points.
