The recognition came following the Czech Government’s decision to expand its Council of Ethnic Minorities, which approved the nomination of two members representing Vietnam and Belarus.

Under the decision, Pham Huu Uyen from the Van Lang Citizens’ Association represents the Vietnam people in the council.

According to Tran Viet Hung, Vice President of the Vietnam Association in Czech Republic, this is good news for the 65,000-strong Vietnam community living in the country as they will receive assistance from the Czech Government to further develop their native tradition, culture and language.

In some localities with high numbers of Vietnam residents, Vietnam children may be taught in their mother tongue, he said.

Vietnamese people will have the right to use Vietnam in public places as well as at courts, he said, adding that they are permitted to set up radio and television programmes in Vietnam.
