According to statistics from the General Statistics Office in 2025, women currently account for 50.1% of the country’s population. In recent years, Vietnamese women have increasingly promoted their potential and strengths, while actively participating in patriotic emulation movements and national campaigns, especially the emulation movement “Building Vietnamese Women in the New Era” launched by the 13th National Women’s Congress.
Women from all walks of life have united, innovated, competed enthusiastically in labour and production, fulfilled their roles within the family well, and made important contributions across many sectors, thereby helping to successfully realise the country’s socio-economic development goals.
Affirming women’s role in politics
In the political sphere, Vietnamese women have not only affirmed their leadership role and capacity to participate in policy-making and implementation but have also brought humane perspectives, promoting equality, progress, and sustainable development. Women are increasingly active in Party building and in building the political system.
Millions of women have actively contributed opinions to draft documents for Party congresses at all levels and the 14th National Party Congress, while participating in the election of deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term. The proportion of female deputies in the 16th National Assembly reached 30%. According to data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, this figure is higher than the global and regional averages.
The proportion of female deputies in provincial- and commune-level People’s Councils and female Party committee members increased compared with the previous term. Specifically, the proportion of female deputies in provincial-level People’s Councils reached 30.45% (up 1.45% compared with the previous term), commune-level reached 31.48% (up 2.5%), and female Party committee members for the 2025-2030 term reached 18.68% at provincial level (up 2.68%) and 27.4% at commune level (up 6.4%).
Many women hold key leadership positions in local government apparatuses and central agencies. According to Government Report No. 48/BC-CP (dated February 10, 2026) on the implementation of national gender equality targets in 2025: the proportion of ministries and ministerial-level agencies under the government with female key leaders reached 59.1%; 82.35% of state management agencies and provincial-level local authorities had female key leaders, while the figure at commune level was 43.3%. For the first time, the country has had a female deputy prime minister and a female president of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front Central Committee.
The contingent of female civil servants and public employees has made increasingly important contributions to national construction and development, seriously and responsibly implementing the policy of reorganising the two-tier local government apparatus and the streamlining revolution throughout the political system.
Promoting women’s courage on all fronts
In the economic sphere, according to statistics in 2025, women accounted for 46.9% of the labour force, with high proportions in several economic sectors. Specifically, women accounted for 75% of the workforce in the service sector, 45-50% in manufacturing industries, 65% in the informal economy, and 55-60% in agriculture.
According to a report from the Ministry of Planning and Investment on implementing national gender equality goals in 2024, women accounted for 28.2% of directors and owners of enterprises and cooperatives. Female entrepreneurs have made many contributions to the economy, job creation and the promotion of women’s entrepreneurship. Many have successfully led enterprises not only domestically but also affirmed their position in international markets.
Women farmers have actively applied science and technology, developed crops and livestock, contributed to stabilising agricultural production, developing OCOP products, and gradually transforming production models in a green, clean, and sustainable direction.
Female workers enthusiastically engage in production and have introduced many technical improvement initiatives, contributing to higher labour productivity, especially in manufacturing, electronics, and textile industries.
In the fields of education and science, women have promoted their intelligence, perseverance, and endurance, making important contributions to improving the quality of human resources, spreading knowledge, nurturing character, and creating a foundation for the development of future generations and social progress. Women account for around 40% of lecturers and scientific research experts and 21.5% of professors and associate professors. Many have become leading scientists, outstanding teachers, and excellent researchers.
Female intellectuals have increasingly developed and participated in important positions in agencies, enterprises, and domestic and international organisations and are actively contributing to the development of social policies, education, scientific research, science and technology, and innovation.
In the fields of culture, sports and tourism, female artists, athletes, tour guides, and managers have shown dynamism, creativity, and inspiration, constantly striving, dedicating themselves, conquering new heights, preserving, and promoting national cultural identity, thereby contributing to promoting the image of the country and Vietnamese people to the world while affirming the role and position of Vietnamese women in modern social life.
In healthcare, with a strong sense of responsibility, dedication, and compassion, female doctors and medical staff have overcome difficulties, performed well in medical examination, treatment, and public healthcare, and made many contributions to the achievements of national medicine, from developing new treatment methods to research and teaching, thereby significantly improving people’s quality of life.
In the fields of national defence, security, and foreign affairs, women in the armed forces have shown resilience and courage, actively participating in maintaining security and order, protecting the Fatherland, and contributing actively to United Nations peacekeeping forces, enriching the heroic traditions of the Viet Nam People’s Army and the People’s Public Security Force, while spreading the image of a peace-loving, responsible, and humane nation.
Women working in foreign affairs, with courage, intelligence, and dexterity, have effectively undertaken roles in negotiations, cooperation, and cultural diplomacy, contributing to enhancing the country’s position and prestige in the international arena.
Vietnamese women overseas have made many contributions to preserving and promoting national cultural identity, preserving the Vietnamese language, and enhancing the image of Vietnamese people and the country internationally.
Spreading good values in the community
Contributing to the country’s overall development achievements, young women have actively participated in social activities, volunteer programmes, and start-ups, becoming an important force in the promotion of innovation, especially in science and technology and digital transformation.
Elderly women have played a major role in passing on, preserving and developing traditional cultural values, serving as strong support for younger generations and becoming active contributors to movements in residential communities.
Ethnic minority women have increasingly taken the initiative in improving their lives, actively participating in socio-economic development activities, and becoming an important force in preserving ethnic culture, developing community tourism, and promoting indigenous economies.
Religious women have actively participated in social activities, charitable work, and social welfare programmes, spreading the positive values of religion into social life.
Women with disabilities and women in difficult circumstances have always strived to rise above challenges, affirming their role through labour, study, and community activities, inspiring others with their willpower and resilience.
It can be affirmed that Vietnamese women have made and continue to make important and comprehensive contributions across all areas of social life; increasingly promoting their role and position, actively participating in Party building, strengthening the political system, preserving national cultural identity, and contributing to the country’s progress and sustainable development, while also preserving family happiness, raising children, caring for spiritual life, and building progressive, civilised, prosperous, and happy families.
