AP photojournalist Evgeniy Maloletka won the World Press Photo 2023 for his photo featuring emergency workers carrying Iryna Kalinina, an injured pregnant,woman, from a damaged maternity in Mariupol, Ukraine. Her left hand rested on her bloody lower abdomen. Her baby was about to be born and Irira, 32, died half an hour later.
The Photo Story of the Year Award went to Danish photographer Mads Nissen for a series of photos on the daily life in Afghanistan in 2022 titled “The Price of Peace in Afghanistan”.

The Photo Long-Term Project Award went to photographer Anush Babajanyan from Armenia, who reflected on the water management crisis in Central Asia due to climate change and the breakup of the Soviet Union.

For the Open Format Award, photographer Mohamed Mahdy from Egypt teamed up with residents of Al Max, a fishing community in Alexandria, to keep the memories of the community and won.

Up to now, the Egyptian government has relocated a third of the neighbourhood of Al Max. The photographer encouraged the locals to create an image archive to preserve the memories of the village.
Spanish photographer Emilio Morenatti received the Honourable Mention.
