Located at No. 20 Tran Binh Trong Street, An Phu ward, Ninh Kieu district, the hospital was founded on the basis of upgrading the city’s Medical Diagnostic Centre established in 1996.

The 50-bed hospital with ten divisions is expected to provide medical check-ups and treatment of cardiovascular diseases for local people, as well as those from the Mekong Delta region, helping ease overload at central-level hospitals and save travel costs for patients.

According to Doctor Cao Minh Chu, deputy director of the Can Tho Department of Health, the facility will facilitate human resources development in the field and deployment of advanced techniques in treating cardiovascular diseases to improve medical quality and better meet the needs of healthcare for the people.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Chairman of Can Tho municipal People’s Committee Le Van Tam urged the hospital to invest in upgrading facilities and equipment to meet requirements for cardiovascular treatment, while collaborating with major hospitals in the region and across the nation for effective technical implementation.

Currently, there is only one cardiovascular hospital in the Mekong Delta owned by An Giang province providing medical treatment for patients locally. Patients in other localities in the region still depend on their local general hospitals for cardiovascular examination and treatment, without specialised medical centres performing interventional cardiovascular surgeries. They also have to travel to Ho Chi Minh City or farther for cardiovascular subspecialty treatment, intervention or surgeries.

According to Can Tho General Hospital’s statistics, the hospital is always in overload for cardiovascular surgical treatment with 100-135 cases each day.
