Hue seeks ways to develop cultural industries for sustainable tourism

The international conference on “cultural industries – a foundation for sustainable tourism development”, held on the afternoon of December 19 in Hue City, has been described as an important milestone in realising Viet Nam’s strategy for the development of cultural industries to 2030, with a vision to 2045, under the Prime Minister’s Decision No. 2486/QD-TTg.

The conference underscored the role of culture as a crucial endogenous resource.
The conference underscored the role of culture as a crucial endogenous resource.

More than merely introducing policy, the conference – organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in co-ordination with the Hue City People’s Committee – created a forum for substantive dialogue among regulators, local authorities, businesses, experts and domestic and international creative communities to seek solutions to develop a cultural-industry ecosystem linked to tourism in a sustainable direction.

The focus was placed on strengthening linkages among stakeholders and effectively tapping into high-potential fields such as cinema, performing arts, creative design, handicrafts and video games to shape distinctive tourism products with high added value.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung delivers a speech at the event

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said the strategy places emphasis on establishing and nurturing an integrated cultural-industry ecosystem in which the State plays an enabling role in shaping the institutional framework, localities are the implementing actors, and businesses and the creative community serve as the key driving forces.

Through sharing international experience and domestic practice, the conference highlighted culture as a vital endogenous resource, helping to make tourism a spearhead economic sector—developed in a sustainable manner while strongly reflecting Viet Nam’s identity. In doing so, it aims to gradually affirm the position of cultural industries within the economic structure and enhance the competitiveness of Viet Nam’s tourism sector in the region and globally.

The choice of Hue City as the host location reflects expectations that Hue will become a model for harmonising conservation with the promotion of heritage values, and for linking cultural-industry development with sustainable tourism – making a practical contribution to implementing the strategy in the years ahead.
