Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, Minister of Science and Technology Nguyen Quan, and leaders of provincial agencies joined nearly 500 leading scientists at the inauguration.

Among the attendees were five Nobel laureates and Fields Medal recipient Prof. Ngo Bao Chau. All of whom are participating in an international physical science conference – the ninth Meeting Vietnam – from July 28-August 17 in Binh Dinh’s Quy Nhon city.

Located in Ghenh Rang ward, Quy Nhon city, the 18.4 ha centre was put into operation after two years of construction. The French-style complex consists of a three-storey international convention centre which cost nearly US$2 million.

The centre is the result of an initiative of the Meeting Vietnam Organisation, which was founded by Prof. Tran Thanh Van, a Vietnamese scholar living in France.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy PM Nguyen Thien Nhan emphasised that science and technology (S&T) development, along with education and training, are top national policy priorities, crucial to boosting Vietnam’s sustainable development in all fields.

S&T plays a key role in renewing growth models, improving the competitiveness of the economy, and accelerating national industrialisation and modernisation, he added, saying that the government strives to provide an environment for technological innovation and creation.

Nhan also said that the opening of the ICISE and the ninth Meet Vietnam mark a milestone in the efforts of scientific communities at home and abroad to help Vietnamese scientists access the world’s latest scientific developments.

According to the Chairman of the provincial People's Committee, Le Huu Loc, the centre will be a place for scientists from around the world to gather for scientific research. It is expected to connect young Vietnamese scientists with major intellectual centres around the world. The latest scientific discoveries will be announced here regularly.
