The Mao Khe plant is one of the pivotal power projects in the nation’s energy development strategy and includes two turbines with a total capacity of 440MW which will provide roughly 2.8 billion kWh of electricity per year for the national grid.

It consumes dust coal from Mao Khe, Trang Bach, Khe Chuoi and Hong Thai mines in Quang Ninh province which helps to utilise coal resources and protect the environment.

The plant will also contribute to reducing power shortage in the upcoming dry season, boost the national socio-economic development as well as create jobs for local people in the province and neighbouring areas.

Constructed with a total investment of US$557 million, it covers over 72 hectares in the three communes of Xuan Son, Trang An and Binh Khe in Dong Trieu district, Quang Ninh province.

KAIDI Electric Power Co., Ltd from China was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract worth nearly US$430 million for the plant in 2009.

Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group is the state-owned mining company and conducts its operations under the brand name Vinacomin.

The construction of the plant began in July, 2009 and its two turbines were completed and put into operation in October 2012 and January 2013 respectively which generated 1.2 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid.
