National rural and agricultural census to begin in July

The National Statistics Office (NSO) will launch the 2025 Rural and Agricultural Census in July. This is one of three national censuses conducted every ten years on a nationwide scale.

The census will cover a vast geographical area, involve a large number of subjects and units, contain complex content, and be implemented over an extended period.

According to the NSO, the census aims to collect essential information on agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural areas to serve three primary purposes.

Firstly, the data collected will be used to compile statistical indicators within the national statistical indicator system; to evaluate current conditions, analyse trends, and develop plans and strategies for the development of rural areas and the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors.

Secondly, the data will support research and analysis regarding the size and structure of the rural and agricultural labour force; monitor changes in rural infrastructure; and enable international comparisons of rural and sectoral indicators.

Thirdly, the information gathered will contribute to building a database on rural areas and the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors, facilitating in-depth research.

The NSO also stated that the census will target individuals working in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries; households engaged in these activities; farms, enterprises, and cooperatives operating within the sectors; as well as commune-level People’s Committees.

The census will be conducted using both face-to-face interviews and indirect data collection from the surveyed units.
