Phu Quy named among top 10 must-explore destinations in Southeast Asia

The Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism has announced that Phu Quy (formerly part of Binh Thuan Province, now under Lam Dong Province) has been selected by Khaosod English (Thailand) as one of the Top 10 most pristine and worth-exploring destinations in Southeast Asia for 2026.

At a time when many tourism hotspots are facing overtourism, such as Bangkok or Bali, Khaosod English’s list highlights tranquil corners that still retain their pristine beauty, local character, and distinctive experiences.

The list was compiled by Khaosod’s team of experts following on-site surveys and evaluations based on criteria including destinations that remain unspoilt, are relatively difficult to access, yet strongly embody the identity and spirit of Southeast Asia.

“Bangkok is buzzing again, Bali is packed with visitors, and Viet Nam is ‘viral’ across social media. Heading into 2026, the question is no longer where to go for fun, but where can you truly listen to yourself?” Khaosod English wrote in its article.

Alongside Phu Quy, destinations such as Ulu Temburong (Brunei), Nong Khiaw (Laos), and the Mergui Archipelago (Myanmar) also made the list.

According to Khaosod English, instead of travelling to familiar destinations across Southeast Asia, an increasing number of international visitors are now seeking out regions that remain pristine, are less accessible, and are not yet dominated by mass tourism.

Khaosod English described Phu Quy as an ideal choice for those wishing to reconnect with themselves amid island nature, noting that its turquoise waters, mountainous terrain, and breezy atmosphere offer sensations distinctly different from other destinations.

The Phu Quy special administrative area is located about 120 km southeast of central Phan Thiet. It comprises a main island and several smaller islands such as Hon Tranh, Hon Do, and Hon Da Cao. To reach the island, Visitors typically travel by high-speed ferry from Phan Thiet.

According to the Tourism Information Centre under the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism, Phu Quy attracts both domestic and international visitors thanks to its pristine beauty and limited human impact, earning high praise from regional tourism experts. With its clear blue sea and constant sea breeze, the island is particularly well suited for photography, nature exploration, and experiencing local life.

Unlike other bustling tourist islands in the region, Phu Quy offers visitors the chance to slow down and fully immerse themselves in the natural surroundings.

Recently, a new tourism model has emerged on Phu Quy Island — freediving or coral-reef diving at Bai Can. Freediving is a form of underwater diving that uses minimal equipment, typically including a mask, fins, and snorkel, accompanied by a support person. This activity has brought fresh experiences to visitors to Phu Quy and is attracting growing interest from both domestic and international tourists.

The Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism noted that Phu Quy’s inclusion among the Top 10 must-explore destinations in Southeast Asia is not only an opportunity to promote local tourism but also helps strengthen the image of Viet Nam’s sustainable and distinctive destinations on the international tourism map.
