Various activities to celebrate Tet Festival in Hanoi’s Old Quarter

Relic sites and cultural spaces around Hanoi’s Old Quarter in Hoan Kiem District will feature various activities imbued with traditional Tet (Lunar New Year Festival) characteristics, including the erection of a “Neu” tree (New Year's tree) and decorations with 12 zodiac animals, and introducing Tet spaces of Hanoians, calligraphy displays, and traditional art performances.

On the occasion of the upcoming Tet (Lunar New Year) Festival, the Management Board of Hoan Kiem Lake and Hanoi’s Old Quarter will coordinate with relevant units and individuals to organise a cultural programme themed “Tet Viet – Tet Pho 2024” (Vietnamese Tet – Tet in the streets 2024).

The opening activity will be the offering ceremonies and ritual of erecting ‘Neu’ tree at Kim Ngan Communal House. The space of Kim Ngan Communal House is decorated into a traditional Tet space according to the theme of the 12 zodiac animals and the zodiac animal of 2024 — the Dragon.

Also at Kim Ngan Communal House, the cultural experts and researchers will talk about Tet Festival of the Tay and Nung ethnic minority groups as well as the hobby of experiencing hoa thuy tien (daffodils).

Those who are interested in learning about traditional Tet of ancient Hanoians can visit the Heritage House (No. 87, Ma May Street). In addition, visitors can join in making banh chung (square glutinous rice cake) at the House on February 3.

Hanoi Old Quarter Cultural Exchange Centre (No. 50, Dao Duy Tu Street) will recreate the traditional Tet space of the Northern Delta Region, display paintings and pottery products under the theme of the zodiac animal for 2024, and feature traditional music performances and discussions about the traditional Vietnamese Tet.

Other cultural addresses around Hanoi’s Old Quarter such as the Cultural and Arts Centre (in Hang Buom Street), Dong Lac Communal House (in Hang Dao Street), the Old Quarter Heritage Information Centre (in Hang Buom Street) will also introduce Vietnamese culture and Tet customs.

From January 25 to February 9, artisans and craftsmen will introduce folk products such as Hang Trong, Kim Hoang, Dong Ho folk paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, rattan and bamboo items, and 'To He' (a traditional toy manually made with glutinous rice powder) on Phung Hung Street.

The activities will start from the morning of January 28 and end after Tet Festival. Many activities will be held during the Lunar New Year to serve the demands of people and tourists.
