Viet Nam and China preserve time-honoured friendship

Over the past 76 years, the relationship of traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between Viet Nam and China — two neighbouring nations—has demonstrated enduring vitality, withstanding the ups and downs of the regional and global landscape.

This enduring bond is a precious shared asset that generations of leaders and people from both nations are determined to preserve and cultivate, thereby making practical contributions to peace, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.

In 1950, Viet Nam and China officially established diplomatic relations, marking a historic milestone in the ties between two close neighbours whose mountains and rivers are linked.

In the 76 years since that milestone, friendship and cooperation have remained the defining currents of the Viet Nam–China relationship, evidenced by the wholehearted mutual support and assistance the two countries have exchanged at every stage of development.

Amidst the current landscape of new opportunities, challenges, and development goals, both nations are determined to move forward together, deepening their bilateral ties to make them more substantive and effective, ultimately delivering tangible benefits to their citizens.

Built upon the solid foundation of enduring friendship and ever-strengthening political trust, the Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership and the Viet Nam–China Community with a Shared Future of strategic significance are being vigorously promoted, yielding substantive results across various fields.

The positive strides in relations between the two Parties and countries are clearly reflected in frequent high-level strategic exchanges, increasingly comprehensive and diverse cooperation mechanisms, and fruitful collaboration across various fields. Regarding economics, trade, and investment, Viet Nam has maintained its position as China’s largest trading partner within ASEAN for 10 consecutive years, while also ranking as China’s fourth-largest trading partner globally in 2024 and 2025.

Conversely, China has been Viet Nam’s largest trading partner for over two consecutive decades. Strategic connectivity between the two nations — particularly in transport infrastructure and logistics — has seen significant positive momentum.

Both sides are advancing standard-gauge railway connectivity and piloting “smart border gate” models, thereby helping to improve customs clearance efficiency, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen regional supply chain integration.

Furthermore, the Viet Nam–China relationship continues to be vigorously promoted across sectors such as security and defence, education and training, culture, and tourism.

Notably, people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in education, culture, and tourism have been vibrant. During the state visit to China by General Secretary and President To Lam in April 2026, the two sides announced the launch of the Viet Nam–China Tourism Cooperation Year (2026–2027).

This initiative aims to boost cooperative activities and tourism promotion, upgrade tourism infrastructure and services, and consolidate their respective positions as each other's largest source markets for tourists.

The proud cooperative achievements realised by Viet Nam and China clearly demonstrate that the shared understandings and major strategic directions set forth by the high-level leadership of both Parties and nations are being translated into concrete cooperative outcomes, delivering practical benefits to their citizens.

The solid foundation of cooperation — cultivated jointly by generations of leaders and citizens from both nations — serves as the driving force for Viet Nam and China to continue steering their bilateral relationship towards stable, healthy, sustainable, and long-term development. It also acts as a crucial prerequisite for achieving breakthroughs and elevating the bilateral relationship to a new level of development.
