The Ban Phu Citadel Festival opened in Dien Bien Province on April 2 to celebrate the 270th anniversary of the Muong Thanh area’s liberation (1754-2024) and 225th death anniversary of Hoang Cong Chat (1769-2024).

The festival was among the activities held in response to the National Tourism Year - Dien Bien 2024 and the 70th anniversary of Dien Bien Phu Victory.

The two-day festival included an incense offering to Hoang Cong Chat, martial arts performances, cultural arts exchanges, a photo exhibition, and a fair displaying high-quality agricultural products of Dien Bien Province.

In May 1754, Hoang Cong Chat — a man from Hoang Xa Village, Nguyen Xa Commune, Vu Thu District, Thai Binh Province — and his troops coordinated with Thai ethnic people in Dien Bien Province to defeat invaders from China to regain peace to the Muong Thanh area of Dien Bien Province.

In 1758, Chat’s troops began building Ban Phu Citadel and finished the construction in 1762. They based themselves in the citadel and protected a vast area in the northwest of Vietnam.

The Ban Phu Citadel Festival is organised annually on the 24th day of the second lunar month - the death anniversary of Hoang Cong Chat.
