Vietnamese singer wins first prize at International Opera competition

Young Vietnamese opera singer Ninh Duc Hoang Long won the first prize at the ninth Simandy Jozsep International Opera Competition in Hungary on April 4.

With the aria titled ‘Hazám hazám’ (My homeland, my homeland) – the piece being associated with legendary Hungarian opera singer Simandy Jozsef – on the final night, Long become the champion of the competition for the 18-25 age group.

The International Opera Competition drew the participation of nearly 150 competitors from Hungary and numerous countries around the world, including Slovakia, Ukraine, Serbia, Romania, Japan, China and England.

This is one of the most prestigious opera competitions in the world, making the young talent’s achievement a great pride for not only himself, but all of Vietnamese music.

The 25-year-old opera singer was a student of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music before receiving a college scholarship under the agreement between the Vietnamese and Hungarian Governments for 2013-2017.

Long was the only foreign candidate to pass into the Opera department of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Hungary in June, 2014. He is praised as a ‘musical phenomenon’ by the Hungarian media.
